Description

Type 89 Aircraft Machine Gun. Plain air cooled barrel with a right side recoil piston assembly that makes the weapon look like it has two barrels. The right hand straight cocking lever is attached to the top slide on the bolt. The action is marked with the Kokura Arsenal stamp and 17.1 (1942 January). It has a wooden pistol grip and a large plate steel guard to cover the fingers. A crude wooden shoulder stock is attached to the rear of the action. It has a central pivot post mount underneath. It has a rear cross hair sight but the front post sight is missing.

History / Summary

This type of weapon would originally have been used in a Japanese Army aircraft but it has been modified for ground use. It was found on the Rai Coast of New Guinea in February 1944.
