Group portrait of the seamen's rugby union football team from HMAS 'Brisbane', champions of the Malta Naval Base, 1917-1919. Identified are: Back row: Joseph Bruce Landseer Brown, RAN (second from left); Darkie Curtis of New Zealand (NZ) (second from right) who is described as a good goalkeeper; Warrant Officer (WO) Gordon, referee (far right, in all-white). Second row, Chief Bandmaster WO 'Sandy' Patton (far right, in front of Gordon). Front row: Jock MacKenzie (second from left); Chaplain George Stubbs, (third from left); Sid Giles (far right). The sailor, seated front, holding the football is the captain, Laurie McHattie of Nelson, NZ. Chaplain Stubbs, of Turramurra, NSW (born in Christchurch, NZ), later served on HMAS Sydney (II) and was lost, aged 57, when the ship sank with all hands on 20 November 1941.
