Le roi de Serbie: Pierre I (King of Serbia: Peter I)
Description
Seated portrait of Peter, King of Serbia in left profile. Peter I (1844-1921) was King of Serbia from 1903. He sits slumped on a box overlooking the battlefield. In June 1914, suffering from poor health and old age, Peter appointed his heir, Alexander, to be regent. But Peter's stirring proclamations, and his visits to the trenches, encouraged the Serbian national resistance. He participated in the retreat across Albania in 1915.
