The Victorian Navy
Description
A scene of five ships at sea that was published in the Illustrated Handbook of Victoria in 1886. From left to right, the vessels are: the ironclad monitor Cerberus (after conversion to a military mast instead of two naval masts), 3rd class gunboat, 1st class torpedo boat Childers, frigate Nelson, and 3rd class gunboat Albert.
This work is inscribed with the names 'G Ashton', and Calvert, the latter possibly a reference to Samuel Calvert, who was also an active printmaker in Melbourne during the 1880s.
