Shades of Matruh and Cleopatra's bath 1941
These images describe the different standards of behaviour for soldiers between being at home and being away. The scenes are all located at or near the beach; with the first in the upper left corner showing a large middle eastern style building on a beach with many bathers, a rowboat and a watch tower. The next image depicts two Australian soldiers sitting on their clothes sun baking wearing only their slouch hats. Above them to the right is a dream scene in which one of the naked soldiers fights with a man wearing an ancient Roman toga and helmet. They are watched by a naked woman in a bathtub. The next image depicts two soldiers behind a barbed wire barricade. One looks angrily at the other who is removing his clothes. To the right of this image is a sun baking Australian soldier wearing only his slouch hat; his clothes and boots are folded beside him. He is dreaming of a young woman writing a letter. The final image pictures two couples sitting on a beach, one couple are seated in the sand and the other are under an umbrella, with the woman on the sand and the man, smoking a pipe, seated in a deck chair. Between them and the surfers in the water is a man removing all his clothes.
