Autographed good luck flag carried by a Japanese soldier
Description
Japanese soldier's autographed national flag with signatures, slogans and poems written in black ink characters. White silk flag has inset hand-stiched hinamaru in red cotton. The name of the recipient/owner of the flag is not given. Apart from the traditional wish of good fortune in time of war, there are signatures, mainly of women, and two poems. The first poem translates as 'What is the Japanese spirit? If someone asked The answer would be that it is like Fragrant blossoms of mountain cherries in the morning sun', and the second as 'Since things started to happen this way, We all know the consequences. But we have to keep going Because of the Japanese spirit'.
