Description

Early First World War German torpedo, 45cm diameter. The casing is bronze aluminium, a metal that combines lightness with corrosion resitance. It makes use of contra-rotating propellors, which counteract the effect of the torque that would be experienced if only one propeller was used. It has two small steering vanes on its fin, and two larger depth control vanes. The torpedo has been fitted with a solid bronze replica pistol head.

History / Summary

Similar to the type carried by German torpedo boats, destroyers, and light cruisers such as SMS Emden. Also used by German submarines. Technical significance lies in its method of propulsion and the fabrication methods employed (brazed finger joints on its nose, flush rivets, individually numbered machine screws).
