Description

This painting records the oiling at sea of ships of the British Pacific Fleet engaged in the attacks against Japan prior to the surrender of the Japanese in 1945. HMAS 'Nizam' is seen in the foreground taking oil through the pipe-line from a United States Navy tanker (centre), while in the background, also taking on oil from the same tanker is HM Aircraft Carrier 'Indefatigable'. After bombarding the coast of Japan the warships would return to the refuelling area, restore and refuel, coming alongside the tanker, taking aboard the fuel-line and both warship and tanker proceeding at about 8 knots until oiling was completed.
