Control Observation Post
Description
Sketch for a painting of a Control Observation Post, operated by the Middle Head Garrison Battalion, Sydney. The work shows a typical scene of internal security and coastal defence operations in and around Sydney during the Second World War.
Richard Ashton was appointed an official war artist in 1942, during active service with the Australian Imperial Force in New Guinea, however ill health forced him to resign from the post. After recuperation he rejoined the army to serve in Northern Australia and New Guinea. In a private capacity he was able to produce a large number of drawings and oil sketches.
