Air Commodore Charles Kingsford-Smith
Description
Portrait of Air Commodore Charles Kingsford-Smith, MC., A.F.C. (RAAF and NZPAF), 19th Battalion, wearing flying headgear. At the age of 18 Charles Kingsford-Smith enlisted as a private in the A.I.F., and was posted with the 19th Battalion at Liverpool Camp. It was as a Sapper in the 4th Light Horse Signals Troop, when he went overseas in 1915. Transferred to the 2nd Divisional Signal Company unit and served on Gallipoli until the evacuation, mostly as a "runner".
