Making sailors: youthful ambition
Description
Depicts a young boy in civilian dress looks across a harbour at a warship. The same boy also appears as an onlooker in the last of Brangwyn's Christ Hospital panels,'let the people praise thee, O God'. This work is no 19 from the series of 66 lithographs,'The Great War: Britain's efforts and ideals', published by the British Ministry of Information, London, 1917. Brangwyn was one of 12 artists commissioned to design a series of 6 lithographs depicting the Efforts of War. This rather poignant, pared down image shows a young lad yearning to be aboard the shadowy naval cruiser.
