Description
Illustration for publication "Soldier Superb- the Australian fights in New Guinea". Depicts a group of soldiers lying at the edge of a hill with their guns pointing down a range.
First published in the wartime publication "Soldier Superb- the Australian fights in New Guinea" by Allan Dawes, 'Not titled [Soldiers lying with guns]' was produced for the chapter titled Jungle Genius. The chapter described the experience of warfare in Papua New Guinea and the resilience of the Australian soldiers who had to adapt to the foreign tropical conditions. Drysdale most likely drew inspiration for his image from the period he spent living in Albury, NSW 1942. Based among several army facilities, it was there he observed firsthand Australian servicemen training in rifle ranges.
