Schlachtfeld mit toten soldaten [Battlefield with dead soldiers]
The aftermath of battle in France. Viewed from a high vantage point, the battlefield is strewn with the bodies of dead soldiers. There are devastated houses and burnt trees in the distance. This is one of five photolithographs by Grosz related to the First World War. The fifth photolithograph, 'Schlachtfeld (Battlefield) 1915 (Duckers E 24) is held in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Grosz served in the German army for six months in 1915; however, his hatred of authority resulted in a court martial for insubordination. He re-enlisted in 1917, but shortly afterwards required psychiatric treatment: "The time I spent in the stranglehold of militarism was a period of constant resistance - and I know there was not one thing I did which did not utterly disgust me."
