Captain W D Watson
Description
Portrait of Captain Walter Derrick Watson, VX20422, second in charge of 2/8th Australian Cavalry Commando Squadron. Captain Watson previously served with the 2/1st Australian Independent Company as Section Leader in Bougainville between 1941 and 1942. He raised the New Hebrides Defence Force of free French officers and 500 natives in 1942. Captain Watson also served with the 2/6th Australian Independent Company as Troop Leader in the Ramu Markham campaign and led the No 1 Troop in the main attack on Kaipit in 1943 in Bougainville.
