Description
Head and shoulders portrait in left profile of Choi Wah Joon, the houseboy for the Australian No 77 Squadron, RAAF in Kimpo, Korea. Hele was serving as a Private in the AIF during the Second World War when in 1941 he was commissioned by General Blamey to depict the activities of the Australian in North Africa. From June 1943 until the end of the war, Hele worked in a number of locations in Northern Australia and New Guinea, holding his commission until 1947. With the commitment of Australian forces to Korea, Hele was again commissioned as an official war artist, with the rank of Major in 1952. From 1953 he executed portraits and and painting commissions for the Australian War Memorial and was awarded a OBE for his services to art in 1969.
