88 radio set
Description
Portrait of a platoon signaller, with '88' radio set, wearing headphones and microphone (set carried in two pouches on chest), during the Korean War. The 88 radio was vital for maintaining communications between patrols and positions during the Korean War. Despite this they were cumbersome and occasionally unreliable depending on terrain.
Hele made more than 30 portraits of Australian servicemen during his time in Korea, concentrating on the individual’s experience of the conflict.
