Portrait of New Guinean Tapioli, DC, a Sergeant of the Papuan Infantry Battalion, Finschhafen, New Guinea. Tapioli was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
Tapioli, DC (PN463), served in the Papuan Infantry Battalion, Finschhafen, New Guinea. On several occasions from 1 June 1943 to February 12, 1944, Tapioli showed outstanding bravery and a wide knowledge of jungle warfare single-handedly killing numerous Japanese and leading patrols to valuable information. For his service Tapioli was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
