RAAF Aircrew members of No. 52 Transport Squadron, RAF (Flight Lieutenant William Walsh, Pilot Officer Keith Caldwell and Flying Officer Stuart Arnold)
Show on the left, Flight Lieutenant W.E Walsh, navigator, Royal Australian Air Force, No. 52 Transport Squadron, receiving the weather report from the wireless operator, while the co-pilot displays an interest in the proceedings. They have temporarily removed their oxygen masks. On the right, the wireless operator is Pilot Officer K. C Caldwell, the weather report he is handing over the Flight Lieutenant Walsh was transmitted from Chabua in the Brahmaputra River valley where all meteorological information is analysed for transmission to all aircraft on the hazardous Hump (Himalayas) route. The co-pilot is Flying Officer S. W Arnold. The captain of the aircraft is not shown except for his gloved hand on the throttles. Dakotas are internally heated and it is not necessary for crew to wear cumbersome clothing when flying at altitude over snow and ice of Himalayas. This squadron, based at Dum Dum near Calcutta, operated Dakotas between Dum Dum and Kunming, China, over a route which crossed the Hump (Himalayas).
