Captain 'D' (Captain Herbert Buchanan, First Lieutenant Gordon Crabb and Lieutenant Commander James Ramsay)

Captain Buchanan is seen on his seat on the bridge of HMAS Napier studying a suspicious ship which has appeared and the First Lieutenant, First Lieutenant Gordon John Branstone Crabb, Royal Australian Navy, is broadcasting orders to the ship's company through the microphone controlling the loudspeaker system. The Navigation Officer, Lieutenant Commander James Maxwell Ramsay, (right) is reporting to the Captain the change of bearing of the suspicious ship. Captain Herbert J Buchanan, DSO,of the Royal Australian Navy, Captain "D", 7th Destroyer Flotilla, joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1916. He specialised in gunnery and while in England at the outbreak of war he commanded two destroyers HMS Valentine and HMS Vanity and received a D.S.O for service at Dunkirk.
