Beaching a Catalina at Koggala
Description
Flying boats beaching at Koggala Lake, Ceylon (Sri-Lanka). The Catalina pictured in the foreground bears the markings JX 336. This Catalina was built by Boeing Canada in Vancouver, Canada, for the RAF. It served with 413 (GR) Sdn., RCAF, in Ceylon, as aircraft "C", but remained in RAF ownership while there. The roundels on the sides of all the aircraft are probably RAF South East Asia Command type. The Catalinas and other flying boats stationed at Koggala would often fly for fifteen hours straight while patrolling the Indian Ocean. After these long patrols the aircraft would be pulled ashore and overhauled and serviced.
