Trooper James Hubbard, rough rider, Australian Remount Squadron
Description
Depicts a drawing of trooper with a moustache, slouch hat, and calf length riding boots,on a horse. The rider holds the reins in his left hand and has his right hand on his left wrist. The horse is standing still with ears pricked. Trooper James Hubbard, of the Wangkumara people had been a horse breaker with the 5th Lighthorse Regiment before being transferred to the Remount Unit in 1916. Lambert’s portrait captures Hubbard in his uniform and slouch hat and calf-length riding boots mounted on a well-trained horse, revealing something of the individual personality of the sitter. Lambert’s drawing, both formal and illustrative, is characterised by an elegance and simplicity, with an emphasis on draughtsmanship and linear style.
