Portrait of Captain James Francis "Frank" Hurley, photographer and author, the official photographer to the first Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-13. During the First World War Captain Hurley was an official photographer to the Australian Imperial Force in 1917-18. He accompanied Ross and Keith Smith on the Australian lap of their flight from England and spent some years on film expeditions to New Guinea. In 1931 Cinesound Productions Limited was established in Sydney and Hurley was engaged as their chief cameraman. He worked as a war photographer again during the Second World War, and published many photographic books on Australia.
