Sakkara, Pyramids and Roman ruins
Description
Depicts Arab men sitting in front of Roman and Ancient Egyptian ruins at Sakkara, with a step pyramid in background. As George Lambert adjusted to the climate and his duties as an official war artist in Palestine 1918, he travelled south of Cairo to Sakkara. The combination of the famous Egyptian step pyramid of Djoser (twenty-seventh century BC) with later Roman ruins provided Lambert with an interesting composition and a reminder of the transience of empires.
