Description

After the capture of Lae in September 1943, allied forces repaired the bomb damaged airfield located in the centre of the city. Mainwaring depicts two Japanese aircraft pushed off the edge of the strip to make way for the allied aircraft. Pictured left is a Japanese A6M3 (clipped wing) Zero with the pale grey camouflage and black cowling, with a D3A Val dive bomber with green paint covering the original grey camouflage finish.
The Chinatown hill can be seen in the background, along with an Allied C-47 Dakota lifting off from the runway.
