Description
After the allied capture of Lae in 1943, the port was established as a major staging point for operation in northern New Guinea and further afield. This watercolour, likely created at Voco Point depicts the rebuilding of infrastructure in Lae. In the background a floating crane salvages Japanese barges. While in the foreground a DUKW amphibious vehicle emerges from the bay next to a LCVP, otherwise known as a Higgin boat. The artillery piece on the shoreline is likely a Japanese gun captured at the fall of Lae.
