Shaggy Ridge
View showing Shaggy Ridge from forward sniper's position, captured by a platoon led by Lieutenant H. Potter of "A" Company, 2/9th Australian Infantry Battalion. From the foreground of the sketch, Potter's platoon advanced to Intermediate Pimple, after the bombardment by P40s. Another platoon led by Sergeant A. McDowall, climbed the side of Intermediate Pimple. The foreground shown had been under constant Japanese sniper, mountain gun and mortar fire during the days preceding the attack. A troop of 25-pounders from 54 Battalion, 2/4th Field Regiment had replied. Regularly in the mornings, bombing and strafing by P40s , Mitchells and Vultees was done, and constant 3" mortar fire from behind the Pimple maintained. Trees on left also contained a Vickers position. The Pimple had been won by a Company of 2/16th Australian Infantry Battalion. The Bismark Ranges behind, Ramu Valley, New Guinea.
