The incident for which Flight Sergeant Middleton was awarded the Victoria Cross
Description
This work shows the incident for which Flight Sergeant Middleton was awarded the Victoria Cross. A Liberator ploughs into the ocean, as two parachutes float in the background. Middleton was awarded the VC for flying for 4 hours from Italy to England after being severely wounded. The two parachutists are the front gunner and flight engineer of the aircraft. Neither of them survived the night in the English Channel after bailing out of the aircraft.
