The Dutch celebrate Queen Wilhelmina's birthday
Queen Wilhelmina was the Queen of the Netherlands from 1890 to 1948. The popular Queen, who became a symbol of the Dutch resistance during the Second World War, fled to England three days after the Netherlands was invaded by Germany in May 1940. From England she broadcast eagerly awaited messages to the Dutch people over Radio Oranje, referring to Adolf Hitler as the archenemy of mankind. This work depicts Dutch prisoners of war in the Omine camp in Japan celebrating the Queen's birthday with a special meal. The Dutch flag can be seen hanging on the wall behind the men, and attached to the flag is a piece of orange parachute silk representing the pennant of the House of Orange, the royal family line from which Queen Wilhelmina was descended.
