Description

Portrait of Captain de Freis, Master of the Dutch merchant vessel MV Nigerstroom. Captain de Freis was born in Friesland, a small province of the Netherlands. He spent much of his life at sea and was involved in West African trade from Holland. The MV Nigerstroom was built by Holland’s major shipping line KPM (Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij) prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, and De Freis was her first master. Dutch merchant mariners played a valuable role during the war, transporting Allied troops to various parts of the Pacific as well as helping to maintain vital supply lines to and from Australia. The Nigerstroom was used for carrying supplies and military hardware.
