RAAF Sunderland Flying Boat attacking U-boat
Description
Many Australian squadrons served in the RAAF Coastal Command, originally formed to counter enemy naval activity. Coastal Command became specialists in long-endurance ocean patrols, mine-laying, torpedo and bombing attacks in enemy shipping, photographic reconnaissance and air-sea rescue, although hunting for German submarines was a major activity in which the Command enjoyed conspicuous success. This painting illustrates a typical attack on a U-boat by a Sunderland flying boat of No. 10 Squadron, RAAF, in the Atlantic Ocean.
