'Not titled [Standing soldier]' was one of a series of drawings Drysdale produced for the publication 'The Australian Soldier - A Portrait' by John Hetherington in 1943. Drysdale's portrait of the soldier is influenced by his interest in the Australian identity and his experience living in the Australian outback. Accentuating the tall stature of the man whose oversized hands hang down on either side, he emphasizes him as someone capable of enduring hard work necessary to survive. Drysdale work became well-known for their archetypal wiry figures which largely redefined the image of the Australian character away from the earlier depictions of European settlers.
