Soldier in dugout
Description
Australian soldier in improvised shelter or dugout. 'I made the sketch while living there at Battalion Headquarters (15 Australian Infantry Battalion, 29 Brigade). The small space, covered with some heavy timber and a tent flap against rain, give a very oppressive feeling, still more so because of the stuffy air. Yet one feels happy about the protection when artillery fire is going overhead. Also a man who is tired after a day's work and nervous tension, is only too glad to have a relatively safe place to relax.' Sali Herman, Bougainville, 1945
