The Nek, Walker's Ridge, site of the charge of the light horse; verso; Rest Gully, pack mule and the draught horse
View of the Nek from the lower slopes with bones littering no-man's-land, site of the charge at the Nek, an August 1915 offensive. Lambert wrote on 17 February 1919: "I was conducted by the 'Mission' from the point on the beach where part of the Australians landed right up to 'The Neck' [sic] which is the ground whereon the terrific sacrifice above mentioned took place. Descriptions are all too true; evidence grins coldly at us noncombatants, and I feel thankful that I have been trained by circumstances of the past to stop my emotions at the border line. From the point of view of the Artist Historian The Neck [sic] is a wonderful setting for the tragedy and I could not wait for the proper time which was just before sunrise but abandoned the 'Mission' and did a sketch which is Buckshee Souvenir about 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock'. The sun smiled nicely but a howling wind made it difficult for detail". (George Lambert to Amy Lambert, 17 February 1919)
