Lieutenant Max Shean
Description
Lieutenant Max H Shean, DSO and Bar, Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 1941 went overseas to serve in ships of the Royal Australian Navy on Gibraltar convoys. He was then posted to special duties with the newly-introduced midget submarines, training crews in their operation and commanding a raid by them on German-occupied Bergen and Norway for which he received the DSO. In July 1945 Shean successfully cut the cable linking Hong Kong - Saigon and Singapore - Saigon in an undersea operation hampered by tidal difficulties and rough weather, for which he was awarded a Bar to the DSO.
