[Dead soldier in the shallows]
Description
Body of a drowned Gallipoli soldier in the sea water that has turned red with blood.
'When the Anzacs leapt from their landing boats in the early morning of 25 April 1915 they were met by a hail of fire from the Turkish defenders entrenched on the cliff-tops. many were struck down as they struggled ashore, weighed down by their full kit and provisions. Some died instantly, others drowned in the shallows, unable to reach the beach. the sea became red with their blood.' Gavin Fry, 'Nolan's Gallipoli', p.52.
