Tug control, HMAS Commonwealth
Royal Australian Navy tug boats Nos 4, 2, 3, 10 (little toot) and ex-patrol craft "Lady Shirley and "Unkasen" sit in the water at HMAS Commonwealth Naval base at Kure, Japan. In the foreground is the oiling pontoon which the artist described as 'Japanese built and manned, there vessels handle all big Naval and Merchant ships in Kure and are under controll of an RAN officer (at present Lt. Commander Waller RANVR).' The large Kure mountains are visible in the background.
Frank Norton was appointed as the Australian War Memorial's official war artist to cover the Royal Australian Navy in Korea from June to October 1952. This scene is one of 8 painted by the artist on his return to the base from following his first Korean patrol with HMAS Warramunga (I) in late July 1952.
