Taeyong Yong Do, US Marines headquarters
Description
While on patrol off the west coast of Korea in August 1952 official war artist Frank Norton spent several days ashore where he was able to make sketches and two oil paintings of the Island of Yong Puong Do. This view from the top of the island Norton described as 'looking East, U.S. Huts and roads for island defence.' He also painted the view south (see ART40011).
Frank Norton covered the Royal Australian Navy in the Korean War as an Australian War Memorial official war artist from June to October 1952. The artist was based at HMAS Commonwealth, Kure, Japan and made this image during his second patrol on the HMAS Bataan. The artist transfered onto the ship at sea from HMS Ocean via HMS Newcastle.
