Forward engine room
Description
Looking across the forward engine room HMAS "Sydney". The Officer of the Watch - an Engineer Lieutenant, is studying a battery of gauges. In the centre are port turbines, beyond them the gear box and propeller shafting. Below in cramped space are groups of feed pumps. The forward engine room drives the outer propellers, the after engine room the inner set, and consequently in the after engine room the two sets of turbines are closer to the centre line and more crowded than this compartment.
