5th Division going in, Lahoussoye
Description
Streeton shows the Australian 5th Division camped in La Houssoye, France, in April 1918. La Houssoye was one of a series of villages that stood behind the front line and was taken over as billets and camps. The Australians had a very strong presence around this area in 1918. Streeton has depicted groups of soldiers marching along the poplar-lined avenue leading into the camp. His preoccupation with the landscape is evident in the monumental scale of the trees standing in marked contrast to the small figures of marching troops below. Acquisition File notes that 'This is the first oil painting by Streeton which depicts troops in camp.' (File: 895/003/131).
