Queen Victoria presenting the first Victoria Crosses, Hyde Park, 26 June 1857
Description
Scene in Hyde Park, troops drawn up for presentation of VCs by Queen Victoria, who is mounted on grey horse towards left of presentation line, on her right is Prince Albert, then the two older Princes on ponies, the Princess Royal and her fiancee (Prince Wilhelm of Prussia), Queen Victoria is leaning down from her horse to pin medals on recipients, who are all Crimean War veterans, in bottom right hand corner is a group of Chelsea Pensioneers (wearing tricorn hats with white braiding and red coats). This lithograph is believed to be based on a watercolour by G. Thomas in the Royal Collection.
