Main Street, Brunei
Description
Depicts a view of Brunei, the remains of wrecked buildings caused by naval gunfire and aerial bombing in main shopping street of Brunei when Australian troops occupied the town. Douglas Watson joined the AIF in 1942 and was an official war artist in Australia, New Guinea and Borneo from 1943 to 1946. In a letter the artist wrote in December 1945 , he lists a painted entitled '8 Main Street Brunei' as one of pictures he intended to paint in his Sydney studio when he returned to Australia.
