[Gallipoli landscape with cliffs]
Description
A dramatic Gallipoli landscape with cliffs. The cliffs are evoked through Nolan's use of mottled and striated patterning in deep red, pink and blue and the sky is mottled pink with streaks of pink crayon. Although these landscapes hold their own beauty, the colours are quite harsh reminding us of the difficulties the young Gallipoli soldiers faced the other side of the world.
This work was presented by Sidney Nolan, along with 251 other Nolan's from the 'Gallipoli' series, in memory of the artist's brother Raymond who drowned in 1945 on his return from military service at the end of the Second World War.
