First convoy in the Indian Ocean
Description
HMAS Australia and HMAS Canberra (Flagship) parting company with the First Australian Convoy approximately 61/4 hours from Fremantle. Convoy consisted of 11 troopships carrying 6th Division of 2 Australian Imperial Force and New Zealand troops being farewelled by escorts of the British battleship HMS Ramillies and the Australian cruisers HMA Ship's Australia and Canberra. l-r: Starboard of HMAS Canberra; Empress of Japan, Empress of Canada, HMT Orcades, HMT Rangitata, (Centre line) Orion, Orford, Dunera II, (Port Line) and Strathaird, Strathnaver, Otranto, and Sobieski (Royal Navy then escorted convoy to - ships not shown)
