Description

An early morning sketch of buildings including a church on the left. Outcrops of rock centre right, bare trees foreground, and birds in the sky, possibly ducks, centre. George Lambert travelled by train through France en route to Palestine in 1918. He noted on this quick sketch, which was drawn from the train in the early morning: "Curious outcrop of rocks. Regret no time for colour." In December 1917 Lambert was appointed an official war artist, A.I.F., with the honorary rank of Lieutenant. He arrived at Alexandria, Egypt, in January 1918. Despite contracting malaria, he embarked for Marseilles, France, in May with over 130 sketches. In January 1919, as honorary captain, he visited Gallipoli on the historical mission with Charles Bean. He later went to Cairo and he visited Palestine, returning to London in August 1919.
