Description

This mural was created by Molly Joan Lamb Bobak, Canada's only female official war artist. The mural was completed after the war, and exhibited in the Canadian section of the Empire Exhibition at Sydney's Royal Show, held from 29 March to 9 April 1947. The mural traces the experience of an Australian airman arriving in Canada as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme. Airmen are shown disembarking from a ship and being greeted by a Canadian family. The next scene shows an airman walking down the street with two Canadian women and a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Then the Australian and his new Canadian wife emerge from a church, and are then pictured iceskating on their honeymoon. The final scene features a ship arriving in Sydney Harbour, with a young woman waving out to her husband who is waiting on the dock. A large kangaroo looks onto this scene. This mural celebrates Australian-Canadian relations, and in recognition of this relationship, the Canadian government gifted the mural to the Memorial in 1947.
