Rejoicing and remembrance, Armistice Day, London, 1918
Description
In this superb drawing, the Queensland-born artist, Vida Lahey depicts a procession of women mourning and rejoicing at St Martin's in the Field, Trafalgar Square, London on Armistice Day, 11 November 1918. The streets beyond are filled with brightly coloured flags, including the Union Jack. Birds fly around the church's pillars, which may be doves representing the peace being celebrated.
