[Study for 'Anzac, the landing, 1915']
Description
Figure study for the commissioned painting 'Anzac, the landing 1915'. The drawing depicts a figure climbing on one knee. Lambert used his son Maurice and an Italian model to pose for him in attitudes of climbing. 'Anzac the Landing 1915' (1920-22) was commissioned by the Australian government through the Australian High Commission in London in 1919, for 500 pounds , as part of the official war art scheme. Lambert began the painting in London and completed it in Sydney in 1922. Lambert obtained facts about the landing from Australian official historian C.E.W. Bean during his visit to Gallipoli in 1919 and made a number of pencil studies of his models, including this one, dressed in uniform as if climbing a steep cliff.
