Hard labour, Kriegsgefangenenlazarette
Description
Of this drawing, the artist later recalled "The prisoner of war hospital at Kokkinia had been an old orphanage and the 'operating theatre' was adapted from rooms on the first floor. The constant task of carrying badly wounded men up narrow staircases created heavy physical stress and the problem increased greatly with the prolonged starvation diet which eventually produced symptoms of Beri Beri with its attendant swollen joints and weakened muscles. This sketch was made from memory late 1941, but is factual in all details".
