History / Summary

Bank note collected by SX27241 Corporal Eric Eduard Isaachsen, who served with a variety of units during the Second World War. Isaachsen was born on 17 November 1912, in Blyth, South Australia. He had served with 27 (Militia) Battalion, before being called up full-time war service in October 1942. Following initial training in Alice Springs, he was posted to 14 Supply Personnel Company on 28 October 1942, and elected to transfer to the AIF on 24 November. Isaachsen was attached to 149 General Transport Company on 27 January 1943. He transferred to HQ 11 Lines of Communication Sub Area, Northern Territory (NT), in December 1943. He transferred back to South Australia for reallotment in January 1945, and reverted to the rank of corporal from lance sergeant. Isaachsen transferred to HQ 8 Australian Base Sub Area, Queensland, in February 1945. He embarked at Brisbane on SS Duntroon on 3 April and disembarked at Morotai later that month. From Morotai he was posted for service in British North Borneo. In early June 1945, the Australian 9th Division had begun landings at Brunei and at Labuan as a prelude to the campaign to retake North Borneo. The war in North Borneo ended with the official surrender of the Japanese 37th Army by Lieutenant General Baba Masao on Labuan on 10 September 1945. Isaachsen was evacuated to 2/9 Australian General Hospital (AGH) with a fungal foot infection in October, and returned to Brisbane in November. On recovery he transferred back to SA, and was discharged on 16 January 1946. Philippine Victory notes (series 66) were printed by the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing. They were carried by US forces commanded by General MacArthur when they landed on Leyte Island on 20 October 1944. A new issue was printed in 1949 by the Central Bank of the Philippines after they assumed financial control.
