Studio portrait of 367 Private (Pte) Walter Richmond Wilson, 5th Light Horse Regiment, a 26 year old selector from Undulla Creek, Tara, Queensland when he enlisted on 6 January 1915. He embarked for overseas service with B Squadron, 11th Light Horse Regiment from Brisbane on 2 June 1915 aboard HMAT Borda. After serving with the 5th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli, he continued serving in the Middle East where he was Mentioned in Despatches and was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for carrying out wounded men under very heavy fire and at once returning to the firing line at Mageibra on 10 August 1916. Pte Wilson was wounded in action on 19 April 1917, returned to Australia on 22 August 1917 and was discharged medically unfit for further service.
